Youth Checking FAQ

Anyone aged 6–17 can open a youth checking account as long as Mom, Dad, or a guardian is on board to be a co-owner until the teen turns 18.

To get started, stop by a Utah First branch with:

  • A parent or guardian who already has (or opens) a Utah First account
  • A government-issued photo ID if your teen has one (driver’s license, state ID, or passport)
  • Or, if they don’t, a school ID, work badge, or even a debit/credit card from another bank works as a secondary ID

You can also start the process online anytime. Either way, we’ll be here to make it quick and easy!

Sharing is caring, but banking is a little different. A kids’ checking account is limited to one child and one parent or guardian co-owner. Got more kids? Each one gets their own account with their own card, perks, and bragging rights.

Youth checking accounts come loaded with nearly every perk we offer. Loan discounts are the only exception since minors can’t legally borrow. Until then, they’ll build smart habits so they’re ready when borrowing makes sense. Think of it as one more milestone to look forward to!

Nope! If you want your kids to practice independence without giving them the keys to the whole vault, youth checking limits their view to their own account, allowing them to focus on their money while your other accounts stay private.

Every point kids earn is just as powerful as the grown-up version. Gift cards, cashback, and travel are all fair game — but when it comes to plane tickets, they’ll need a little adult backup to get off the ground.

Nothing complicated. You’re removed as co-owner, they take the wheel, and the account keeps rolling with all the same perks and tools they already know.

They sure do! Even a few babysitting bucks can start earning interest right away.

Children’s checking accounts pay monthly dividends based on balances, starting at 0.15% APY once the account hits $3,000 and climbing with higher amounts. Dividends are compounded and credited monthly, so every saved dollar has the chance to earn a little extra.
